AI Journey: Multi-Step ChatGPT Conversation

A ChatGPT feature I’ve noticed many people overlook is the ability to have a multi-step, conversational interaction with the tool. This is a pretty key contrast with search engines; when you query a search engine, every refinement is essentially a new query. Much like American Airlines’ customer service department, the search engine forgets everything it knows about you from one question to the next.

ChatGPT allows you to start a new conversation by clicking on a plus sign titled “New chat.” Just below this is a list of your most recent chats; each entry displays the first query within that conversation. (Google Bard works much the same way.)

In this example, my team and I want to start a LinkedIn community for people from other industries to discuss development of the types of solutions we’ve begun at Vetoquinol. Most importantly, we’re not talking about software/technology solutions. Thus, finding the job titles of appropriate people to invite has proven rather challenging.

I’m setting the stage in this chat session by telling ChatGPT what I want to accomplish:

In the following prompt I'm going to describe the job responsibilities of a person whose title is Solutions Development Manager. Your goal is to help me identify other job titles for positions with significantly overlapping skills and responsibilities.
Certainly! I can help you identify other job titles that have significantly overlapping skills and responsibilities with the Solutions Development Manager role. Please go ahead and provide a description of the job responsibilities for a Solutions Development Manager.
The Solutions Development Manager works for a company which generates most revenue from product manufacturing and sales. The Solutions Development Manager (SDM) creates and sells non-product solutions to the same customer base. First, the SDM researches customer needs. Through primary and secondary research, the SDM discovers the most significant problems experienced by a large percentage of the customer base. Next, the SDM develops solutions to the identified problems. These solutions are typically a combination of services, education, and/or products. Finally, the SDM sells the solutions directly to the customer and drives sales through other channels, such as a sales force or marketing efforts.

ChatGPT’s response was pretty good. I won’t copy the entire text, but my AI friend recommended seven different job titles, along with a list of responsibilities typically associated with each title.

The important thing is that ChatGPT allowed me to enter a concept (my SDM job description) and then query based on that concept. In fact, I continued the conversation by asking, “What educational background would a potential candidate for a successful SDM likely have?”

Again, I got a pretty good answer, and I’m certain that ChatGPT is referencing the job description I provided, simply because my question uses the term “SDM.” If it hadn’t used my definition, it wouldn’t know what an “SDM” is. Try it yourself; go to the LinkedIn job search and just enter “SDM.” The AI engine is retaining and using the information I provided.

So, if you feel like no one listens to you, generative AI may be your new best friend…
